SNU, Sillim & Nakseongdae — Our Own Backyard
Gwanak-gu shares a border with Dongjak-gu, where we are based — of all the university neighborhoods on this site, this is the one closest to our garage. We have worked Sillim's hillside one-rooms in person, and the housing here has a plumbing personality all its own.
Why student housing around SNU clogs the way it does
SNU's international students — a large share of them graduate students who stay for years — mostly live off campus, in the dense one-room blocks between Seoul Nat'l Univ. station, Nakseongdae and the old Sillim gosichon on the hill. Three patterns fill our call log here:
- One stack, ten bathrooms. A building of twenty one-rooms often hangs every bathroom off a couple of shared stacks. When the line narrows, the lowest rooms back up first — and the tenant who calls us is rarely the tenant who caused it. Our camera-and-photo record is what keeps you from paying for the whole building's problem.
- Gosichon conversions. Much of the old exam-village housing was carved into micro-units years ago, with bathrooms added where closets used to be. Improvised drain slopes and corrugated hoses behind the walls mean recurring slow drains that a bottle of Daiso cleaner will never fix.
- Deposit anxiety. Students worry a repair will eat their deposit. The Korean rule is simpler than the rumors: usage damage is yours, aging pipes are the landlord's. We document the cause on every job — read who pays, landlord or tenant before you agree to anything.
A note for Chinese-speaking students, who are many around SNU: this site also runs in 简体中文 and 繁體中文.

Quoted on siteGetting a crew to a Sillim address
Tell us the dong and what kind of building you are in — one-room block, gosiwon, or a regular villa. In gosiwon buildings the manager (총무) usually has to approve and open shared spaces, so looping them in early saves a second trip. Hillside lanes above Sillim station are no problem; our machines break down into carryable units. Text photos first and you get a realistic window, not a guess.
