Anam — The Korea University Hill

Korea University's international students and researchers live almost entirely on the slopes around the Anam campus — in older multi-family housing that works its pipes hard. (Kyung Hee and HUFS students: your neighborhood has its own page.)

Why housing on the Anam hill keeps plumbers busy

The one-room supply around the campus is mostly converted multi-family houses from the 80s and 90s — three to five floors, a landlord on the first floor or far away, and drain lines that were designed for one family now serving ten kitchens and ten bathrooms. What we see over and over:

  • Hill streets, settled pipes. Anam climbs real slopes. Decades of settling leave shared stacks with bellies and shifted joints where grease and scale collect — the "it blocks again every semester" buildings. Clearing fixes the day; jetting the line fixes the pattern.
  • Winter is the season here. Older multi-family homes in the northeast get the city's coldest nights, and exposed meter boxes and wall-run pipes freeze first. If you are new to Korean winters, read the frozen-pipes guide before January, not during it.
  • Nobody knows who to call. Exchange and degree students usually rented through a realtor who has since vanished from the chat. We fill that gap: cause documented with photos, a short Korean note your landlord or realtor can act on, and the price fixed with you before work starts.

Korea University has a large Chinese-speaking student population — this site also runs in 简体中文 and 繁體中文, and the Korean-message templates in our guides work the same in any language. Living one stop over near Kyung Hee or HUFS? See the Hoegi & Imun page.

Getting a crew to an Anam address

We come up from Sadang in the southwest, so this is one of our longer runs inside Seoul — when you text, we give you an honest window rather than a hopeful one, and for non-emergencies we may suggest a time slot that avoids the cross-town rush. Narrow hill lanes and walk-ups are routine; tell us the building type and floor, and whether the landlord lives in the building.

English by text (SMS) works best. Phone calls are fine in Korean or Japanese.
